An opera recital featuring mesmerizing highlights from
«Le Nozze di Figaro» & «Don Giovanni»
THEATRE OF THE NO, Athens’ first English theatre, proudly presents for only 8 shows «Sunday Tea with Mozart» an exhilarating opera recital, featuring spellbinding highlights from two of Mozart’s most famous operas, Le Nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni. Premiering on October 13th, the show will run every Sunday until 1st of December.
ABOUT THE OPERAS
Both Le Nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni sparked controversy and upset social order when they first premiered. Le Nozze di Figaro, based on Beaumarchais’ politically charged play, was banned for its “immorality” and “revolutionary tone” by Emperor Joseph II. However, thanks to the wit of librettist Lorenzo da Ponte and Mozart’s stirring compositions, the emperor was eventually swayed, lifting the ban and allowing Mozart’s music to take center stage.
Don Giovanni, considered by some to be the ultimate opera, dared to challenge its audience even further. The unrepentant Don Giovanni, who refuses redemption, meets a fiery end that rattled critics and moralists alike. The bold depiction of servants outsmarting their masters, paired with Mozart’s ability to blend drama, humor, and humanity, made both works timeless reflections on power, class, and human folly.
