Heracles beyond the myth: an original folk musical

THEATRE OF THE NO welcomes the award-winning New Zealand theatre company The Barden Party to Athens for the first time, presenting their new original musical theatre production Heracles: Of Men & Beasts. An original folk musical, the production looks beyond Heracles’ legendary labours to explore the man behind the myth. The performance will take place on Saturday, September 26 at 18:00, for one night only in Athens.

Following their highly successful UK debut at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where they drew attention for their inventive fusion of Shakespeare and bluegrass music, The Barden Party return with a brand-new original production.

Heracles: Of Men & Beasts is inspired by the hero of Greek mythology, but rather than focusing on his legendary deeds, the production turns its attention to the man within the myth: his struggle with his darker self and his complicated relationship with Hera, Queen of the Gods.

Four characters come together around a timeless question: Who are we when no one is watching? Hero, man, beast or god?

Ancient mythology meets the aesthetic of 1940s Hollywood in a distinctive theatrical and musical world shaped through innovative live looping. One musician creates the sound of an entire band live on stage, building the musical landscape of the performance in real time.

From Shakespeare to Greek Mythology.

The Barden Party was founded during the Covid-19 lockdown by American-Kiwi actor and director Laura Irish as a flexible touring theatre company, initially focused on outdoor Shakespeare productions. The company’s name is a playful combination of Bard and Garden Party, reflecting its original outdoor theatre concept.

Following its successful appearance at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the company now moves from Shakespeare into Greek mythology with Heracles: Of Men & Beasts, bringing its distinctive theatrical and musical approach to one of the most recognisable heroes of the ancient world.
