THEATRE OF THE NO, Athens’ first English-speaking theatre, presents “Mother Tongue” by Georgia Tsangaraki, a powerful one-woman performance returning to the stage following its successful presentation in December 2025. The production premieres on Monday, 9 November, and will be performed every Monday and Tuesday at 21.00, for a limited run of just 10 performances with greek & english subtitles.

The play follows Skyler Doukas, a middle-aged Greek stand-up comedian, who lives and works in London. After many years away, she returns to Greece and is confronted with memories and traumatic experiences that continue to shape her life.

Blending stand-up comedy, spoken word, storytelling and animation, Skyler unfolds her personal story, moving between humour and confession, comedy and profound emotion. Her complicated relationship with her mother, the tender memory of her late father, and the traumatic experience of abuse by her mother’s new husband form a past that continues to surface in the present.

At the heart of the play is language. The performance moves between Greek and English, the two languages of its protagonist, creating a distinctive theatrical experience in which the “mother tongue” becomes closely connected to memory, identity and the deepest layers of personal experience.

The movement between the two languages is not simply a narrative device but a central element of the performance: language becomes a space of memory, conflict and, ultimately, reconciliation.

Director’s Note
Mother Tongue addresses the power of the mother tongue and its connection to the memories that shape us as we grow. It speaks about one’s homeland and the desires we expect it, perhaps in vain,  to fulfill ,the grief of loss, and the violence of abuse that leaves a lasting mark on the victim.  The goal is to create common ground between performer and audience, where the protagonist’s life experiences sometimes painful, sometimes humorous are lived and exposed in a powerful present.
