THREE ONE-ACT PLAYS by ANTON CHEKHOV
THEATRE OF THE NO
Premiering on 22 February
He comes to propose. Within minutes, they are fighting over land and whose dog is better. Another man arrives to collect a debt—and finds himself challenging a widow to a duel. Meanwhile, a reluctant lecturer is supposed to explain the dangers of tobacco, but has far more urgent complaints about his own life. Theatre of the NO presents Anton Chekhov’s The Bear, The Marriage Proposal and On the Harmful Effects of Tobacco Smoke: three short plays in which a polite conversation is never far from a declaration of war—or love.
Directed by Maria Tzanoukaki, premiering 22 February, this evening brings together people who desperately want something from one another and have spectacularly bad ways of asking for it. Chekhov lets them rage, flirt, boast and unravel, exposing the longing beneath their ridiculous behaviour. Come for the quarrels. Stay for those revealing moments when laughter catches in your throat—and someone on stage begins to remind you of someone you know.
