THEATRE OF THE NO brings to the stage Alekos Vretos Quartet in “Mediterranean Echoes” , a captivating musical evening infused with the colors, rhythms, and aromas of the Mediterranean. On Saturday, November 1st at 21.30
A lifelong musical explorer, Alekos Vretos, oud soloist, pianist, and composer draws inspiration from the rich traditions of East and West. Through the language of jazz, he creates a distinctive sound world where the oud and ney converse effortlessly with the piano and double bass, blending tradition and innovation in music that is both contemporary and deeply evocative.
In Mediterranean Echoes, Vretos reimagines jazz through a Mediterranean lens, breaking convention by omitting percussion and drums. Here, rhythm emerges organically through melody and musical interaction. The oud and clarinet weave seamlessly with bass and piano, each musician contributing personal artistry while preserving the essence of the compositions.
The repertoire features original works by the quartet members alongside pieces by Ara Dinkjian, Simon Shaheen, and Anouar Brahem, creating a rich dialogue between cultures and sounds. Audience connection lies at the heart of each performance, making every concert an intimate and unrepeatable journey through Mediterranean jazz.
Internationally acclaimed, Alekos Vretos has appeared at major festivals and concert halls worldwide and collaborated with distinguished artists including Mikis Theodorakis, Theodoros Antoniou, Dimitris Maragkopoulos, Gilad Atzmon, Simon Shaheen, Bassam Saba, and Elchin Sirinov, as well as the Camerata – Friends of Music Orchestra, the Hellenic Contemporary Music Ensemble, and the Athens State Orchestra.
