“Laments & Sacred Legends”
Saturday, April 4 & Sunday, April 5
Eleni and Souzana Vougioukli return to the stage of the Theatre of the NO on Saturday, April 4 at 21:30 & Sunday, April 5 at 21:00 for a spellbinding musical ritual of remembrance and renewal, “Laments and Legends.” Blending hymns, gospel, and liberating laments from Greece and around the world, the two artists craft a performance in which mourning becomes a shared, transformative experience of catharsis
Voices that resonate like ancient prayers meet the deep emotional intensity of Easter, in a performance that transitions from darkness to light. A mystical springtime ritual. Special guest: lyricist and composer Giorgos Tampakis.
With a long-standing engagement with traditional songs from around the world, the two artists have been called “the priestesses of multiculturalism.” From an early age, they began exploring the music of different cultures and experimenting with the possibilities of the human voice. With respect for the language, pronunciation, and expression of each song, they perform in over twenty languages and dialects, both a cappella and accompanied by piano, guitar, and percussion played by themselves.
They have collaborated with top artists such as Maria Farantouri, Goran Bregović, Thanasis Papakonstantinou, Loudovikos ton Anogeion, Psarantonis, Alex Sid, Nikos Kypourgos, Tatiana Lygari, Christos Thivaios, Ghetonia, Michalis Tzouganakis, Vasilis Lekkas, Giorgos Kazantzis, Nightfall, Ypogeia Revmata, Rotting Christ, and others.
Their performances have traveled to some of the most prestigious venues and festivals worldwide, from Carnegie Hall in New York and the International Mugham Centre in Baku, to the Biennale of Young Artists in Milan, the Megaron Concert Halls in Greece, and top stages across Europe, America, and Asia.
