A Chamber Music Ensemble Exploring the Sounds of the Eastern Mediterranean
The ensemble “Smari” takes the stage at THEATRE OF THE NO on Sunday, November 23 at 21:00, inviting audiences on a magical “Night Flight” through the musical landscapes of the Eastern Mediterranean.
This chamber music ensemble, combining traditional and classical instruments, listens deeply to the music of the world and performs it with a whispering, almost mystical quality, with six musicians whose influences span traditional Greek, Arab-Persian, and classical music.
Five continuous-sound instruments and a voice used as a musical instrument interact to form a flexible chamber orchestra. The ensemble includes two ney flutes, lyra, cello, double bass, and voice, exploring how the ancient musical traditions of Greece and the Middle East can resonate in contemporary times. Melodies rooted in the tropes of the Eastern Mediterranean coexist with modern harmonies and free improvisation, creating a unique and immersive sonic experience.
Smari has performed at prominent cultural venues, including the Festivals of Sacred Music of the Greek National Opera, the School of Attic Drama, the Megaron Athens Concert Hall, and the Anglican Church of St. Paul. They have participated in theatrical productions such as “The Song of Kyra-Domnitsa”, commissioned by the Greek National Opera for the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution, and “Madre Salonico” with a libretto by Léon Nar.
A highlight of their work is the recording of “Katalogi”, composed by Martha Mavroeidi and based on the Moiróloi of the Virgin Mary, combined with footage from the documentary “In Her Body”, presented as a musical video
