Theatre of the NO, welcomes on its stage the well-known Brazilian music performer Miranda Verouli along with her Quintet of excellent musicians, is presenting her new project, a tribute to Gal Costa, the emblematic Muse of Brazil. Οn Thursday 26 March at 21.30.
Gal Costa (1945–2022) was one of the most important voices in Brazilian music. Antônio Carlos Jobim said that she performed his songs exactly as he wanted them to be heard, while João Gilberto, when he first heard her sing, called her “the best singer in the country”! She was born in Salvador, Bahia and became known in the ’60ies as a key member of the Tropicália movement, along with Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. Her voice, sensual and expressive, combined bossa nova, samba, psychedelia and pop. With a career spanning over five decades, she has released dozens of albums and is considered a cultural icon of Brazil, deeply influencing contemporary Latin American music.
Gal Costa has been a Muse of freedom, poetry and musical daring. Her songs, deeply rooted in Brazilian tradition but always open to experimentation, are reinterpreted here through contemporary jazz harmonies and improvisation, with tropical nuances.
“Μusa Tropical” is not just a retrospective of her work, but a lively musical conversation with her artistic heritage an atmospheric journey, where Brazil meets jazz, with imagination, virtuosity and groove.
Miranda Verouli is considered the “Ambassador” of Brazilian music in Greece and in 2018, she was honored by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the Medal of the Knight of the Order of Rio Branco, for her contribution to the promotion of Brazilian music in Greece.
She is a singer/songwriter with a long presence in the Greek jazz and world scene. Her interaction with local musicians during her long visits to Brazil, combined with her jazz education, has given her a unique authenticity in the interpretation of the Brazilian repertoire.
