THEATRE OF THE NO, Athens’ first English- speaking theatre, presents “Mother Tongue” by Georgia Tsangaraki a striking female monologue that moves between the present and the past of a middle-aged Greek stand-up comedian living and working in London. After a long absence, she returns to her homeland, Greece, and confronts traumatic experiences that shaped her life.

With a unique combination of stand-up comedy, spoken word, storytelling, and animation, the performance shifts between English and Greek, creating a hybrid theatrical language accessible to all. Mother Tongue premieres on Friday, December 5th , and will be performed every Friday and Saturday at 20.30.

The protagonist, Skyler Doukas, armed with humor and truth, undergoes an intense process of self-redefinition and reconciliation with her past, revealing her complex relationship with her mother, the tender memory of her late father, and the traumatic experience with her mother’s new husband.

The play explores her memories and traumas, while the interplay between her mother tongue and acquired language becomes a catalyst for forgiveness and self-discovery, transforming her personal journey into an explosive emotional experience shared with the audience.

Director’s Note
Mother Tongue addresses the power of the mother tongue and its connection to the memories that shape us as we grow. It speaks about one’s homeland and the desires we expect it, perhaps in vain, to fulfill ,the grief of loss, and the violence of abuse that leaves a lasting mark on the victim. The goal is to create common ground between performer and audience, where the protagonist’s life experiences sometimes painful, sometimes humorous are lived and exposed in a powerful present.
